EDP and MPX's thermal power plant Pecem begins commercial operation

The EDP Group company Energias de Portugal, or EDP, S.A., an electricity operator, and MPX, the energy company of the EBX Group, have announced that the thermal power plant energy Pecem has received authorization from the national agency of electric energy, or ANEEL, to begin commercial operation its first generating unit with an installed capacity of 360MW, in December 2012.

The companies are partners in the venture, which represents an investment of $3 billion. Located in Sao Goncalo do Amarante (EC), the plant has a total capacity of 720MW, which is equivalent to half of the generating power of the state.

"We always look for opportunities to grow and continue with our plan to expand the portfolio in power generation. Pecem Energy is a result, since the entry into operation of the first generating unit of the plant, the EDP in Brazil reaches the milestone of 2012MW of installed capacity," said Luiz Otavio Henriques, vice president of Generation and Energy Marketing EDP in Brazil.
